Modern Banknotes
Paraguay's current currency features educators, cultural icons, musicians, and spiritual leaders. These banknotes reflect a more inclusive vision of national identity, celebrating diverse contributions to Paraguayan society—from pioneering teachers to the nation's first saint.
About Modern Paraguayan Currency
Paraguay's modern banknotes in circulation range from 2,000 Guaraníes (about $0.26 USD) to 100,000 Guaraníes (about $13.84 USD). The lower denominations (2,000 and 5,000) are made of durable polymer plastic, while higher denominations use paper with advanced security features.
Unlike the historical notes that primarily featured military heroes, modern currency honours a broader range of contributors: educators (Speratti sisters), founding fathers (López, Francia), cultural ambassadors (Dora del Cerro, Mangoré), and spiritual leaders (San Roque González).
This evolution reflects Paraguay's growing recognition of diverse paths to national greatness—not just through military valor, but through education, culture, faith, and the preservation of Guaraní heritage.
All Modern Banknotes
The 50,000 Guaraníes note has the most fascinating history of any Paraguayan banknote. It was first designed with dictator Stroessner's portrait (rejected), then featured the Paraguayan Soldier (stolen in transit), and finally redesigned with guitarist Mangoré after a theft forced a complete overhaul.
